Sue & Yoga for PwMS

Sue Lee My name is Sue Lee and I have grown up with yoga, I started my teaching career in 1969. I became involved in the world of MS in 1980, becoming a branch welfare officer then chairman. I was chairman of the Cheshire and Merseyside Region and a trustee of the national MS Society with special interest in health, welfare and the needs of carers. Yoga is a vital part of my life - I broke my back when I was four.

How and why this project started

My paternal grandfather studied in India and practiced daily until his death at age of 94. My maternal grandfather practiced yoga in the Royal Navy and survived a Japanese prison camp due, he said, in part to his ability to remain calm and relaxed. My mother was a teacher.

Since 1980 I have evolved a form of yoga especially suited to the needs of people diagnosed with MS. I teach yoga to members of nine branches of the MS Society in the North West of England.

I get out and about teaching the various classes and enjoy travelling to visit friends and family scattered all over the world.

I met my second husband Kendal in 1980 when I was teaching in a health club and he was using the sauna. He had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis about three years previously and his marriage had failed. We moved in together at the end of 1981 and married in 1986.

Kendal has a particularly vicious form of MS and is now almost bedbound and only gets up for 3 hours on alternate days. We still have a good life with the support of several carers a day. Kendal enjoys real ale, classical music and chatting with the large circle of friends who still call round to share these pleasures with him...

Kendal died suddenly in March having managed a pub outing with his favorite real ale and a cigar two days earlier.

This website is dedicated to and in memory of Kendal Stafford Lee without whom none of this would have happened.
