Stress
The stress and upset of a loved one being given the diagnosis
of MS can be destructive to all concerned.
No one quite knows what they should be doing or even how they
should be feeling. If you are starting to snap at each other or
feelings of resentment are building it is time to sit down and be
honest with each other. It is true that you do not know how it feels
to have MS but it is also true that the PwMS does not know how it
feels to sit back and watch someone you love struggling. Fears for
the future apply to both of you although in slightly different ways.
You both need to find other people to talk to and share your feelings
with and many branches of the MS Society have information sessions
for PwMS and separate ones for carers. Your local MS Nurse
(if you are lucky enough to have one locally) can also advise on
support groups.
We tend to be alert or even tense in case our help is needed and,
when it is, how to give that help. A person who has always been
fit and independent may be irritable and resentful if they need to
ask for help and may even resist your assistance ? this leads
to stress for all concerned.
