Yoga Posture (ASANA)

THE TREE OF LIFE
This is one of the oldest known yoga postures and is usually performed standing up as in the first picture (18). It is probably one of the most beneficial postures for people with ms as it helps to lengthen out the middle of the body which spends much of the time squashed up in seated positions BUT most of the benefits are lost if there is too much tension due to fear of losing balance.

To get all the benefits from this posture I find it much preferable to perform it lying down (17) and you will feel those benefits instantly.

Lie down on the floor or bed and bend one knee. Allow the knee to relax out to the side without trying to force it in any way (it will relax towards the floor when it is good and ready) Rest the hands on the floor just above your head with the elbows relaxed outwards (and if this is too difficult try resting them on your forehead)

NOW THE BIT THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE
Put a tiny bit of tension through the straight leg, relax the rest of your body and wait for your middle to start to rearrange itself all by itself. Hold this position for about a minute breathing calmly and then return your hands to your sides, Pull in your tummy and bring up the bent knee. Allow your back to relax Straighten out the bent knee and compare how it feels against the other one - longer, flatter, more comfortable

Repeat to the other side.
