How and why this project started
I have always taught physical movement – Keep Fit in the late 60’s
and 70’s, Stretch-into-Shape in the early 80’s and then the
fashion and my classes changed to aerobics
but all my classes have always been based on yoga movements and
breathing techniques.
In the mid 1980’s when I became involved with the MS Society I
began to take groups to the Yoga for Health Foundation at Ickwell
Bury in Bedfordshire. Everybody who joined these groups expressed
the need for local classes and gradually (and, I have to admit,
reluctantly because “my classes” were the only thing in my life
that did not involve MS) I started teaching yoga to local MS Branches
and ARMS (Action for Research in MS – currently non-operational) in
Manchester.
Over the years my knowledge of MS has grown and I have developed
a method of teaching yoga entirely lying down or seated. I have
learned what works and what doesn’t and the movements have evolved into
a very effective system for PwMS.
I still find I am learning as much as I am teaching at my sessions
and I hope and believe we all have fun into the bargain.
People at my classes started to ask for tapes for the times
when they couldn’t get to a class and the times when I take a break.
They tried other tapes and videos and found them to be unsatisfactory
and, finally, one of my clients became insistent (thank you Heidi)
and, by coincidence her husband is a retired lighting engineer with
camera-men friends. The scene was set and finally three videos have
been produced with a further three planned.
